Content Warning: Mental Illness, Eating Disorders. If you're not new to my blog or social media, then you're probably aware of my lengthy, ongoing battle with mental health. While some days are more positive than others, I often share glimpses of what it's like to be a mentally ill teen in today's day and age on my social media and in my writing. One thing I struggle a lot with is my relationship with food. Somehow, it was Twitter's awful algorithm that saved the day. Twitter recommends me the strangest things through notifications. Obviously, it works, because I pause what I'm doing to see what the hell they're talking about now, but the suggestions are always strange. Which leads me to how I got on Mom Twitter. Most niche sides of Twitter are a scary place. Not Mom Twitter, surprisingly. It's warm and comfortable there. I learn strange life hacks and tell them about my day and they like my writing. Sometimes, the advice I never thought I would hear at 17 makes more sense than any advice I've been given specifically for teens. Which leads me to "Fed is best." It's a statement or state of mind used in the breast-feeding versus bottle-feeding debate. I know it's weird, but stick with me for a minute. When I'm struggling to eat, sometimes I don't eat anything because I can't stop criticizing myself and my body. When I apply the "fed is best" mindset, it makes me feel better. In my mind, it alleviates some of my anxiety about eating the wrong things or eating too much or eating too many calories. So nowadays, when I start to struggle again, I think back to Mom Twitter's advice that seems odd but rings true: fed is best, and whatever you can manage to eat is perfectly fine.
