Did I stay up incredibly late to live tweet my thoughts on Taylor Swift's new album and be amongst the first to blog their thoughts? Maybe. What about it? Mind your business, I'm 17 and can make my own sketchy decisions. Okay, all jokes aside, Taylor has outdone herself with this album. It was amazing. I'm streaming it again as I look over my tweets and write this post. Willow This is art. "The more you say the less I know." The moment I heard this song I knew it was going to be a comfort album for me. I streamed it with friends and we were all buzzing, so shout out to Alyssa and Em in particular for geeking out with me. Champagne Problems The intro to this song is so beautiful I'm obsessed. "You had a speech / You're speechless" and "You won't remember all my champagne problems" really spoke to me. It reminds me of when you break up platonically or romantically and you remember all these little details about them and slowly forget them over time. Gold Rush I loved loved loved the reference to Folklore! Ahh, Taylor always finds a way to bring things full circle. And the fact that this album doesn't just swear, it drops F-bombs? F-yeah! Taylor is almost 31. It's about time. I don't think it was this song (I'm not sure because I accidentally started on the clean edition, thanks to Spotify!), but it's about time anyways. 'Tis The Damn Season This song was so catchy and I loved the reference to Robert Frost. Taylor is always so clever and thinking of ways to incorporate other works into her own. She inspires me constantly. Tolerate It BRB, I'm crying again. Okay, I'm good. "Wait by the door like I'm just a kid / Use my best colors for your portrait." "I know my love should be celebrated but you tolerate it." Um, hello. This is going on my playlist called "Parental Issues" right next to Class of 2013 by Mitski. No Body, No Crime My initial thought and Em's initial first thought was "Getaway Car pt.2" and "this will prove that Haylor committed vehicular manslaughter", but then it started out sounding like an old Taylor song and we were quite sold. Alyssa was in agreement as well, and our overall consensus was that this was a hit. Happiness Not gonna lie, this song really hurt. "There's a happiness / past the blood in the bruise." "I swear there is happiness in our history." This line hit so so hard. It's the destructiveness, the toxicity, the pain. It's wanting to be hopeful while knowing that it's time to get out. I loved it and cried to it. Dorothea "It's never too late to come back to my side." "You know you always know me." My goat named Thea passed away recently and I miss her so much. In a way, this song made me think of her and some ex-human friends both deceased and living that I wish I could say this to but never will. I just want them to know that I still love them and I do think of them, Coney Island "Break my soul in two / Looking for you / But you're right here." God, I love that opener. "We were the mall before the internet / It was the one place to be." I remember those days when the mall was the prime hangout; not necessarily before the internet, but before my parents and my friends' parents let us have phone and free internet reign. Now we never see each other in person because Snapchat or Instagram or Facetime is easier and cheaper. Ivy "I just sit here and wait / Grieving for the living." It makes me think of the hospital and doctors' office and how the world is always moving, whether we notice it or not. "It's the fiercest fire in my life and you've started it." Taylor in love and happy is everything to me!! Cowboy Like Me It wasn't my favorite off the album, but I don't think there's any song off Evermore that I don't like. It grew on me and it is pretty catchy. Long Story Short "I tried to pick my battles / Until my battles picked me." This song absolutely slaps thank you Taylor. I feel like there should be more to say, I'm a musician! But omg I'm so in love and overwhelmed by this album. I will be overanalyzing and raving about it for years and years to come. Marjorie Initially I totally thought this song was about a mom singing to an unborn child, but then Em sent the pic above to the Discord server and then Alyssa pointed out that both the 13th track on Folklore (Epiphany) and the 13th track on Evermore (Marjorie) are about grandparents. SO maybe not. But I love this song, it was soft and sweet and sentimental. Closure The intro to Closure felt kind of indie to me! I loved it. It almost reminded me of the indie duo Oh Wonder, who I also love! Also "Yes I'm doing better / I don't need your closure." "Don't treat me like a situation that needs to be handled." This reminds me of being in the psych ward and feeling so guilty; I was so angry at myself and the world. I didn't want to hear from anybody. Evermore (Eponymous Title Track!) "I had a feeling so peculiar / That this feeling would be for / Evermore." I remember feeling like recovery was out of my reach and would never happen. I remember feeling like life was over. Music, good friends, and writing got me out of there. Taylor and Justin were incredible on this track. I don't know how big of a role Joe Alwyn played, but I'm sure he was incredible too. I loved when it came full circle with "I had a feeling so peculiar / This pain wouldn't be for / Evermore." It made me feel hopeful. Overall It's 2am, EST. I'm currently on my 3rd stream and will be playing this as I fall asleep so I wake up to it. I am obsessed. I think it's the Taylor album I relate to the most so far. Once more, she has outdone herself. Chef's kiss. Anyways, I'm gonna go send this to my friends and post it on my social media then blackout for three hours until I have to go take care of the rescue farm. Night y'all! Happy release day! -m.s.r.
